听力原文:M We're going to have to hire some extra help for the Miller project.

W Oh? But the Miller deadline isn't for another 2 months. That should be plenty of time to meet the deadline, don't you think?

M Mr. Miller's a great client, but he keeps adding to the scope of the project— little things here and there that add up over time. And of course he wants us to do all these things and still meet the original deadline. W Really? I hadn't realized how serious a problem this was. If he's asking for changes that are outside the scope of the original contract, then we need to either renegotiate the contract, or bill him for these extras.

What does the man want?

A.A larger budget for a project

B.More information about a project

C.An extension of a project deadline

D.More people to help work on a project

听力原文:W: I'm really concerned about Jason, Mike. His snoring is getting worse and worse.

M: Maybe he needs to go see a doctor, Jane. I know my brother tended to snore when we lived in the same bedroom, but I don't know it is getting worse. I heard that sometimes a bad snore can cause heart failure because not enough oxygen gets to the brain.

W: That's what I'm worried about. Sometimes it even seems like he stops breathing and I have to give him a push to make him start again.

M: I remember one of my father's friends had the same problem. The doctor said it was sleep apnea. He had to get a pacemaker put in so that his heart wouldn't stop in the middle of the night.

W: You're kidding me! That serious?

M: Yes, that serious.

W: That's it! I'm making an appointment for Jason to see the doctor this afternoon. We can't let this go any longer.

M: Yeah, please do. If there is anything serious, please let me or my parents know as soon as possible.

W: I will.

The woman is______.

A.concerned about Mike's brother's health

B.getting worse and worse for her snoring

C.worried about her snoring while sleeping

Men lie to women. At the heart of many men's lies, however, is the male ego. Men lie to bu
ild themselves up or to conceal something. They are more likely to lie to enhance themselves than women are Men have a hard time admitting failure. How our culture defines success is important to a man, so he assumes it's important to his partner.

In a 1991 study, psychologist William Tooke and an assistant at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh asked 110 students at the university to look at 88 deceptive tactics — such as inflating one's accomplishments and wearing designer's clothes to appear wealthy — and reveal how often they were used in their own relationships. Men were significantly more likely than women to use such deception. Ego-stroking statements that turn out to be total lies may be designed to cover up opposite feelings — for instance, when a man says he values his wife's work but actually doesn't consider it important. Such lies can signal serious problems ahead, whether it's dealing with child care, vacation plans or career moves.

The more quickly a woman seeks the truth behind these lies, the sooner she can remedy the relationship— or, if necessary, end it. As one puts it: "I'd rather have the ax fall than slip down the endless slope of uncertainty and frustration." A wife may not be sure that what her husband is saying means "the end". She should listen closely, not only to what he says, but also to how he says it. According to Depaul, changes in voice can be significant. She has found that people's voices often get higher or shakier when they lie, and they are more likely to stumble over words.

However, there are few things that trouble a man more than a woman's anger — or nagging, as he calls it — so he lies to avoid a scene. It is in "hassle-prevention lying" that men can demonstrate their greatest versatility. A young man in New York City forgot his girlfriend's birthday. When she confronted him, he claimed he'd planned a surprise all along. He grabbed the phone, called a home shopping network and berated the representative for not sending the expensive gift he'd ordered. "If you can't do better than this, I'll tear up my membership card!" he shouted. Of course, the man didn't have a card and had never ordered a gift.

In this book The Varnished Truth, David Nyberg, professor of education at State University of New York at Buffalo, states, "Occasionally there is a lot to lose by telling the truth, and something to be gained by not telling the truth." Still, it is important to remember that lies axe at heart deceptions, and repeated deceptions destroy intimacy. Real intimacy is only possible to the degree that we can be honest about what we are doing and feeling. When lying comes to predominate in a marriage, the relationship begins to deteriorate. A husband and wife can sense the trust erode, and feel their hearts growing colder.

Men, for their part, need to develop the courage to drop the defense mechanisms that bolster their egos and pride, and search for true intimacy with their mates. Telling the truth to a spouse is the first step toward showing that love is more important than lies.

Men have a hard time admitting failure because ______.

A.they think their partners set much store by their success

B.according to tradition as a man they must succeed

C.success is important to both men and women

D.they are defined as success by our culture

M: Me, too. Well, at least there's room in another dorm, Bundy Hall.

W: That's where they're putting me, too. But you'll realize that unless you have a car, Bundy is at least a 25-minute walk from the center of campus. And don't count on taking the campus bus, it runs at really inconvenient times.

M: Great way to start your college career. But, I don't know, maybe there is a positive side to all of these. Since we'll be so far away from everything, we'll be forced to use our time wisely.

W: True. I've heard lots of first-year students get into trouble because they hang out every day in the student center till it closes.

M: Exactly! And not only that, we will get plenty of exercise from all that extra walking.

W: Yeah. And that's not exactly easy walking, either. Around here you just about need a pair of hiking boots, and to enjoy mountain climbing.

Protect Your Nest

It's never too early to protect your family's financial well-being. Yet because most of us are so busy juggling work and family commitments, we tend to neglect the things that don't require immediate attention. Some day, we think, we'll take care of the three essentials-retirement savings, insurance coverage and estate planning. Unfortunately, emergencies can strike and then it's too late. "Failure to plan is a huge mistake," Barbara Raasch, managing director at Wealth and Tax Advisory Services, Inc. , told us.

How can you avoid the "should have, could have, would have" scenario? By putting these three items at the top of your "to do" list-protect your future, protect your family and protect your legacy (遗产).

Protect Your Future

The national savings rate averaged around 0.4% for the first half of this year, according to the U. S. Department of Commerce, meaning Americans spent a shopping 99.6% of their after-tax earnings. Even more frightening, in July the savings rate dropped below zero. We all know we should save more. But with so many goals to save for-a house, the kids' college tuition, your retirement, occasional vacations and a small emergency fund-it's easy to feel there's just not enough money to do it all.

Budget. The first step is to create a budget. Once you know what you're spending your money on, you can figure out What you don't need to spend it on-and stock those savings away. "Every month you have to pay yourself first," says Joe Moglia, CEO of Ameritrade. "Take a little out of your paycheck." It doesn't have to be much-it could be foregoing(放弃) that extra lattice or getting the DVD free at the library.

Retirement. Just about every survey of American investors these days shows that retirement is a main reason for saving. Yet an astounding number of people ignore the opportunities offered by employment-based retirement plans. According to a recent survey by Aon Consulting, more than 20% of those eligible for a 401k plan do not participate at all, while another 53% do not save at a rate high enough to take full advantage of their employers' matching contribution-the closest thing to free money in the retirement savings universe. Consider it money that grows without being taxed.

Emergency reserves. Many financial planners recommend that you have enough money in a savings or money-market account for at, least six to nine months of essential expenses, including your mortgage or rent, insurance premiums, credit card payments, utility and grocery bills and other fixed expenses, such as car payments or student loans. And it's always a good idea to have cash on hand once you are confronted with emergency situations. For example, if the ATMs in your neighborhood are out, you can have enough to cover your immediate needs for a week or so.

Protect Your Family

A major illness, an extended disability (残疾) or the loss of a job could wipe out your financial reserves and any prospect of being able to save enough to achieve your other life goals. Here's what you need to protect your savings:

Health insurance. A recent study of court records and direct interviews indicated that about half of personal bankruptcies in the U. S. are caused in part by medical debts. Only people over 65 are entitled to the medicare. So people under that age face enormous bills and many of them lack insurance.

If your company pro

A.Because we don't know what family financial well-being is.

B.Because we focus too much on developing family relationships.

C.Because we think work is much more important.

D.Because we think it needn't be dealt with immediately.

Section A

How to find true love?

As a writer of romance novels, I create exotic fantasies. My heroines are beautiful, my heroes gilded with a touch of the legendary, my plots larger than life.

Fans sometimes think of me as an 'expert' on love, but my children never ask my advice. When I try to give it anyway, they roll their eyes. (86) To them, I'm just Morn—too impossibly old-fashioned and ordinary to understand the winds of their times.

Since they have reached their teens, however, their often painful searches for that special someone have left me sleepless many a night. There are so many things I wish for them that I am utterly powerless to provide. Sometimes I imagine a little scene, Robby and Johanna ask me, 'Morn, how do I find true love?' here is what I say:

1. Understand that love is a state of mind and heart.

It is not dependent on beauty, physical strength or the romantic settings I use in my books. Though it may begin with infatuation, it moves from physical attraction in a golden curve, often involving sacrifice, to the deepest bond between two people. 2. Settle for nothing less than total commitment.

(87) A marriage certificate won't solve all your problems, but until you have the guarantee of one, you can't begin the struggle to forge yourselves into one unit against the world—the ultimate goal. A mate is the post you lean on, the person who, when you've really screwed up, loves you anyway. The only way to get that kind of mate is to make the dreadful leap of trust and be that kind of mate.

3. Talk about everything—except divorce.

I was not a talker when I met your dad. In my childhood, I'd learned that it was best to remain silent around my alcoholic father, who could twist any statement into a weapon. But Robert stubbornly refused to accept my silence. It was my first intimation of tile strength of his love. Your father and I learned this the hard way. During a trying period years ago, I found myself calmly saying, 'Maybe we should get a divorce.' He answered, 'Maybe we should.' The day we frankly confronted the divorce option, we were not terribly angry with each other, but we had gradually let divorce become a real choice in our thinking. We made a pact, then and there, never again to mention the word 'divorce' in association with us. We haven't dared break the pact in 17 years.

4. Want the best for each other.

Being married doesn't mean that you are glued together. One of the wonderful things about love is that it binds without crippling. Remember not all your activities, friends or enthusiasm will be the same as your mate' s. When your father went back to college for his teaching degree, it meant starting over, but I wanted him to fulfill his potential. When I decided to abandon paramedical training and become a writer, he encouraged me. (88) Loving someone doesn't mean your goals are always identical. But if you want something then your mate wants it for you too.

5. Only one person can be crazy at a time.

Life is seldom a smooth highway of cooperation. You get angry. Your mate becomes obsessed. Either one of you can become totally obnoxious. But you can't both go wild at the same time. One of you has to stay in adult mode. The real thing has to do with love. And it isn't always glamorous-or easy. Love helps you get to the bathroom when you're sick. Love agrees to disagree on serious subjects. When you walk out the door in a rage, love trails after you, shouting, 'You can't get away from me! I love you, and I'll follow you wherever you go !'

(89) And so in my sleepless hours, Robby and Johanna, I wish for you that moment when you look up and find someone watching you as if you were a candle—as if you were the only light in a world of darkness.

Like our political society, the university is under severe attack today and perhaps for th
e same reason; namely, that we have accomplished much of what we have set out to do in this generation that we have done so imperfectly, and while we have been doing so, we have said a lot of things that simply are not true. For example, we have earnestly declared that full equality of opportunity in universities exists for everyone, regardless of economic circumstance, race or religion. This has never been true. In another sense the university has failed. It has stored great quantities of knowledge; it teaches more people; and despite its failures, it teaches them better. It is in the application of this knowledge that the failure has come.

Of the great branches of knowledge--the sciences, the social sciences and humanities--the sciences are applied, sometimes almost as soon as they are learned. Strenuous and occasionally successful efforts are made to apply the social sciences, but almost never are the humanities well applied. The great tasks of the university in the next generation are to search the past to form. the future, to begin an earnest search for a new and relevant set of values, and to learn to use the knowledge we have for the questions that come before us. The university should use one fourth of a student's time in his undergraduate years and organize it into courses which might be called history, and literature and philosophy, and anything else appropriate and organize these around primary problems.

The difference between a primary problem and a secondary problem is that primary problems tend to be around for a long' time, whereas the less important ones get solved. One primary problem is that of interfering with what some call human destiny and others call biological development, which is partly the result of genetic circumstance and partly the result of accidental environmental conditions. It is anticipated that the next generation, and perhaps this one, will be able to interfere chemically with the actual development of an individual and perhaps biologically by interfering with his genes. Obviously, there are benefits both to individuals and to society from eliminating, or at least improving, mentally and physically deformed persons. On the other hand, there could be very serious consequences if this knowledge were used intentionally to produce superior and subordinate classes; each genetically prepared to carry out a predetermined mission.

This can be done, but what happens to free will and the rights of the individual? Here we have a primary problem that will still exist when we are all dead. After all, the purpose of education is not only to impart knowledge but also to teach students to use the knowledge that they either have or will find, to teach them to ask and seek answers for important questions,

The author suggests that the university's greatest shortcoming is its failure to______.

A.attempt to provide equal opportunity for all

B.offer courses in philosophy and the humanities

C.prepare students adequately for professional studies

D.help students see the relevance of the humanities problems
